Linux on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4270 Laptop

Installation

First I tried to install Novell/SuSE 6.4 directly from the bootable CD, but the CD didn't boot. So I have taken the boot image floppy, which mounted the CD than. I will try to check Debian, too. Note: You probably have to use the TECRA boot floppy therefore!

BIOS

The BIOS can be reached by different programs from the MS-Windows GUI. Or from DOS mode by TSETUP.EXE. You may also press <ESC> at boot time (immediately!), then <F1>.

Graphics

Text Mode

I have enabled 'stretched' mode in the BIOS, so the whole display is used.

X-Windows

Couldn't get the S3 driver (XFree86 3.3.6) to work, but I didn't study README.s3 carefully yet. Instead I have used the framebuffer X server. With vga = 773 in /etc/lilo.conf it works in 1024x768 mode. Though this mode still needs some work to get the display a bit more crisp. vga = 785 (0x311) and vga = 791 (0x317) didn't work for me.

TV Video Out

Not tested yet.

PCMCIA

With older PCMCIA-CS packages the driver i82365 initializes the PCMCIA card alright, but freezes the machine at the login prompt. So please use the latest PCMCIA-CS package.

USB

Mouse worked with usb-uhci driver (Legacy mode not tested yet).

IrDA

Not tested yet.

Sound

Not tested yet.

Mouse (AccuPoint II)

Works in PS/2 mode. The scroll buttons are reported as wheel motion (Z axis motion) and can be accessed after mapping in /etc/XF86Config.

'tosh-utils'

This application by Jonathan Buzzard offers:

  • fan works well.
  • hotkey doesn't seem to work.
  • svpw not tested yet.

Internal Modem

minicom works with ltmodem binary driver insmod -f ltmodem, modem is at /dev/ttyS14 than.

Floppy

Works well up to 1.722MB, fdformat /dev/fd0u2880 for 2.880MB couldn't read all cylinders.

APM

Not tested yet.

Fn Keys

Seem to work well, to set display brightness, speaker volume and other features.

'lanoche' Report

Preface

This is a survey about Linux related hardware features of the Satellite Pro 4270. I don't try to explain the usual installation details (for instance, which partitions I have made).

Werner Heuser <wehe_at_tuxmobil.org>

Installation

On my Satellite Pro 4270 I have installed the SuSE 6.4 Linux distribution.
