Linux on the Portege 7020CT Laptop

I installed Novell/SuSE 7.0 from the floppy drive in the docking station, and continued from the internal CD drive. I will try to check Debian/GNU-Linux, too. Note: You probably have to use the TECRA boot floppy therefore!

BIOS

The BIOS can be reached by different programs from the MS-Windows GUI. Or from DOS mode by TSETUP.EXE. You may also press <ESC> at boot time (immediately!), then <F1>. I changed DISPLAY mode to "stretched" to get the full screen size for the text console.

Graphics

Text Mode

I have enabled "stretched" mode in the BIOS, so the whole display is used.

X-Windows

I have used the framebuffer X server. With vga = 791 in /etc/lilo.conf it works in 1024x768 16 bpp mode. Note you have to start with the options -- -bpp 16 or set the default color depth to 16 in /etc/XF86Config. Also I didn't take certain modelines but used the key word "default" in the screen section.

S3 driver (XFree86 SVGA) works, in 1024x768 16bpp, too.

PCMCIA

Works with recent PCMCIA-CS packages.

But doesn't work with older ones. Or at least you have to use certain BIOS settings, and don't use gpm mouse manager!!

  • Device Config = All Devices
  • PC Card Controller Mode = Auto-Select (if you encounter problems take PC- Card mode)

USB

Mouse worked with usb-uhci driver (Legacy mode not tested yet).

IrDA

Not tested yet.

Sound

Configured with yast2. First configuration during installation didn't succeed. But the second one! ALSA ES1978 Maestro-2E AudioDrive.

Mouse (Accupoint II)

Works in PS/2 mode. The scroll buttons are reported as wheel motion (Z axis motion) and can be accessed after mapping in XF86Config .

tosh-utils

tosh-utils an application by Jonathan Buzzard couldn't be tested yet.

Internal Modem

minicom works with ltmodem binary driver insmod -f ltmodem, modem is at /dev/ttyS14 than.

Docking Station

Network card can be configured by yast2, uses eepro100 module.

'lanoche' Report

Preface

This is a survey about Linux related hardware features of the Portege 7020CT. I don't try to explain the usual installation details (for instance, which partitions I have made).

Werner Heuser <wehe_at_tuxmobil.org>

Installation

On my Portege 7020CT I have installed the SuSE 6.4 Linux distribution.
