SUSE 7 Pro, 2.2.16 I used the linux568.zip , followed the Linmodem HOWTO , couldn't use fixscript to version-change Sean's ppp2214.o but I found a prefixed ppp.o for 2.2.16 that worked. Last I added "insmod ltmodem insmod slhc insmod ppp" to my /sbin/init.d/boot.local to load them at bootup.
