20 Nov: ZDNET: HP SACRIFICES LINUX HANDHELDS

"One PDA, code-named Calypso, was to run on a 133MHz StrongARM processor and include a monochrome touch-screen and an MP3 player. Rumours of a low-end HP Linux PDA have circulated recently, and the model was scheduled for release in late November or early December, according to the engineer. 20 Oct: Asterix versus MobiliX - MobiliX Still Standing

Three months ago MobiliX has got a request to withdraw its name. Until now the legal representative of the trademarks for Asterix and Obelix has not taken any further legal action yet. According to the lawyer of MobiliX this doesn't provide final security. But at least there is no possibility anymore to close the website immediately. This success is caused by the strong support of the Linux community. Many people have written to Les Editions Albert Rene (Paris) the holder of the trademarks. Other people have provided a list of projects with similar names ending on "iX". This list has grown quite big, therefore it's not continued anymore.

Stéphane Doyon wrote at the iPAQ mailing list: "We (Nicolas Pitre and myself) have successfully ported BRLTTY to the iPaq and tested the setup by interfacing with a BrailleLite 18 through the serial port. BRLTTY is a program that allows access to the Linux text-mode console using various brands of Braille displays."

Sharp launched its personalmobile tool, the SL-5000, which combines the functions of a mobile phone with a Web-enabled PDA. The device runs on the Linux OS (EmbediX, kernel 2.4) combined with Personal Java.

v3.2 of the Linux-Infrared-HOWTO is out. Changes: obsolet references to irmanager, /dev/irnine and wrong device numbers removed, changes according to kernel 2.4.x applied, extensive proof-reading and testing, new links to e-Squirt added, new chapter about module options, new chapter about null modem connection, sections reordered and cleaned up, other links updated.
