Linux on the Fujitsu-Siemens LifeBook S-4572 Laptop

Installation

I have installed Debian 2.2 (Woody) from CD, which worked fine. Using kernel 2.4.7 nearly everthing works fine.

MS-Windows2000 Recovery

I have tried to recover the pre-installed MS-Windows2000 (I couldn't access the partition anymore after a conversion from FAT to FAT32 with Partition Magic from PowerQuest). I have choosen the "R" (recovery) option and this left my partition scheme untouched. So I suppose it will leave an existing Linux installation intact, too. But your first boot probably has to be done from a boot floppy or CD and than LILO has to be re-run.

PCMCIA

Tested with PCMCIA-CS-3.1.28 package.

DVD

I have tried xine but without success yet.

Sound

Though I use the latest ALSA 0.9.0-beta7 no success yet. The snd-card-intel8x0 module loads fine, alsamixer is able to start, but alsaplayer and aplay don't work. Kernel driver i810_audio might work. Also I have heard about a working ALSA OSS emulation.

IrDA

I had only time for a quick check. Enable IrDA (instead of FIR) in the BIOS. SIR works on /dev/ttyS3. irdadump detects my HP Laserjet 2100.

findchip doesn't find the FIR controller.

Network Card

The network slot is supported by eepro100 driver. Note: Set BIOS option from AUTO to ENABLED. MAC 00 00 0E .. .. ..

Internal Modem

The modem seems to be an unsupported Intel modem, see lspci below. Maybe the Intel(C) V.90 modem chipset driver for Linux helps. This driver supports Linux versions 2.2.12 to 2.2.18. This driver is not compatible with kernel version 2.4.X. Chipsets: MD563X and MD5628D. Also I have got a report about the modem being the wellknown Lucent WinModem, but instead of connected to the PCI bus it seems integrated into the Intel chipset. This isn't supported by the (binary) driver yet.

Errico Prota <eprota_at_tiscali.it> reports: "I found the correct driver for internal modem of this notebook. See at SMlink (Linux driver for internal modems), The last version is 2.9.9 and it works very fine in mandrake 10 official (2.4 and 2.6 kernel supported). Needed the kernel source and gcc compiler installed. I make also a symlink /dev/modem to /dev/ttySL0 created by the kernel module slamr."

APM

The apm -s and apm -S commands work. Closing the lid turns the backlight of and text and X-Windows recover fine, when opening it again. Couldn't test the different BIOS options, especially SUSPEND TO DISK yet.

ACPI

ACPI is detected by the kernel, but I don't use it yet.

Multi-Bay Slot

CD-RW

Works fine, see CD-Writing-HOWTO for details.

PCMCIA-Adapter

Works out of the box.

Secondary HDD

I had no device to test it, but it should work.

X-Windows

The ATI graphic chip works with XFree86 4.0.3 and my X configuration file. I use the framebuffer X server in text mode. With vga = 791 in /etc/lilo.conf it works with a resolution of 1024x768 .

Mouse/Touchpad

Couldn't get the mouse scroll buttons to work yet, see my XF86Config file for the settings I have tried. No time to test the GlidePointPS/2 protocol yet. But for other S-Series models there are success reports.

Also I couldn't check the tpconfig program yet.

DMI

The Desktop Management Interface - DMI is a specification from the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) that establishes a standard framework for managing networked computers. DMI covers hardware and software, desktop systems and servers, and defines a model for filtering events and describing interfaces.

Fn-Keys

The Funkeys programm couldn't be tested yet.

Smart-Card-Reader

The reader is detected as a PCMCIA device, but I don't know how to use (I don't even own a Smart Card). Further infos you may get with the smartcard programm and my SmartCard survey.

Port Replicator

Everything seems to work well. Some more work has to be done to check for automagic switching, when connected or not.
