Specs

BIOS

You can reach the BIOS via F2. Hitting <ESC> on startup lets you choose between several boot devices (hard disk, cd, removable). Note that there is a new BIOS 0105A available from ASUS(ftp://ftp.asuscom.de/pub/NOTEBOOK/L4x00R/Bios/). You can use FreeDOS(http://www.freedos.org/) for flashing.

Installation

It was installed with Debian 3.0r2 Testing which was a rather painless procedure. Afterwards, kernel 2.6.6 with patches for SWSUSP, ACPI and DSDT-initrd was installed.

Screen

XFree86

XFree86 does not run out of the box with the free radeon driver shipped with Debian. The easiest solution might be to include the repository for the dri-trunk in your /etc/apt/sources.list, see the dri project [archived link] for instructions.

TouchPad

The touchpad works with /dev/psaux. The standard ImPS/2 driver is good enough, even the scroll wheel is supported.

Console

The console runs fine with vesafb at XGA.

VGA-Out

Works well if you have the external monitor plugged in at boot time. You cannot switch between the various possible combinations of external/internal on/off. This might change, when the next version of acpi4asus is released.

PC Card

PCMCIA works out of the box with yenta_socket.

Network

LAN

The network interface works just fine with the b44 driver.

WLAN

Currently, there are theoretically two possibilities to make this chip running:

ndiswrapper 0.7 seems to work well, even with WEP "encryption". The commercial driver from Linuxant is untested.

Power and Configuration Management

ACPI

ACPI seems to work. You do not need a patched DSDT but there are some erros showing up at boot.

Sleep

Standby and Suspend-To-RAM have only been tested briefly and they do not seem to work. The machine wakes up at once in S1 and does not wake up at all from S3.

Suspend-To-Disk

SWSUSP2 (2.0.0.81, 2.6.6-test11) does not work well. It fails on resume, because some pages do not match. There was no time to investigate if tweaking suspend.conf to unload drivers and such would help.

CPUFreq

The module speedstep-centrino should be chosen. The user-space daemon cpufreqd runs fine with it.

Hotkeys

All Hotkeys work with the driver acpi_asus. They can be configured via the acpid, although the machine is unknown to acpi4asus(http://sourceforge.net/projects/acpi4asus) 0.28. It works in compatibility mode to M2E just fine, with the exception of display switching. Proper data was sent to the maintainers of acpi4asus to have it fully supported with the next release.

Sound

Sound works with Advanced Linux Sound Architecture - ALSA driver snd-atiixp.

Modem

scanModem suggested to take the driver for 537 modems from Intel which does not work (Version 537EP 2.37.50.1). Windows talks about Agere, but the driver ltmodem (Version 8.31alek) does not work either. The conexant (Version 04051300) and slmodem (Version 2.9.7) drivers do not work, too.

Infrared Port - IrDA(TM)

SIR

SIR seems to work fine on /dev/ttyS1.

FIR

No FIR driver available in the kernel sources seems to work.

DVD/CD-RW

The drive works fine on /dev/hdc, both reading and writing DVD/CD-RWs.

USB

Works out of the box. Tested with USB Mouse and Harddisk (2.0).

FireWire

The ohci1394 module loads fine, though FireWire was not really tested due to the lack of a proper device.
